Does Everyone With Braces Need to Wear Elastics?

Braces do more than just straighten teeth. They also correct bite issues and help align the jaw into its proper position. While rubber bands (also called elastics) are a common part of orthodontic treatment, not everyone with braces will need to wear them.

Elastics are typically used to correct bite problems such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites. If your teeth are already properly aligned in terms of bite, you may not need elastics at all. Your treatment plan will depend on your specific orthodontic needs and the orthodontist’s recommendations.

What Does Wearing Elastics Involve?

These small rubber bands connect the brackets on your upper and lower teeth. Their purpose is to apply gentle, consistent pressure to guide your teeth and jaw into proper alignment.

Here is what to expect:

  • Elastics come in different sizes and strengths depending on your treatment.

  • Brackets have small hooks where the bands attach.

  • In some cases, orthodontists may use springs instead of elastics to correct bite issues.

Elastics are usually worn for a few months at a time and are only taken off when eating or brushing. They should be replaced at least once a day.

Why Are Elastics Important?

Wearing your elastics consistently is key to keeping treatment on track. Skipping or forgetting to wear them can delay progress and extend the overall treatment time.

If you’re unsure how to wear elastics, your orthodontic team can show you the proper technique and answer any questions.
