Follow these simple dos and don'ts to keep your retainer clean and in good condition. 

Dos

Whether your orthodontist recommends wearing your retainer full-time or only at night, be sure to: 

  • Clean your retainer daily. Use lukewarm water and a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently remove debris.

  • Store your retainer in its case. Keeping it in its protective case helps prevent damage and reduces the risk of losing it.

  • Deep clean it weekly. To remove mineral buildup, soak in a 1:1 mixture of vinegar and water for 15 minutes. 

  • Remove your retainer when eating. Taking your retainer out during meals helps prevent food from getting trapped and reduces the risk of damage.

Don’ts

To help your retainer last as long as possible:

  • Avoid high heat. Hot water, direct sunlight, and other high temperatures can warp your retainer. 

  • Skip abrasive toothpastes and cleaners. These products can scratch the plastic and create places for bacteria to collect. 

  • Don’t bite your retainer into place. Always use your fingers to place it properly to avoid bending or cracking it. 

  • Don’t wear your retainer during sports activities. Physical activity can damage your retainer or cause it to injure your mouth if you are hit. 

When to Replace Your Retainers

Retainers don't last forever. If yours becomes damaged, no longer fits properly, or shows signs of excessive wear, contact your orthodontist about getting a replacement. Teeth can begin to shift surprisingly quickly, so replacing your retainer promptly is important to maintaining your orthodontic results.
