What is the hardest bite to fix with braces?
Braces are designed to correct a variety of bite issues, including underbites, overbites, open bites, and crossbites. While many bite problems respond well to orthodontic treatment, some are more complex than others.
Typically, the most difficult bites to fix are severe underbites and open bites. These issues often require the most intervention, especially if the problem is skeletal and not just tooth alignment. In complex cases, some patients may need both braces and oral surgery to fix their bite.
Types of Bite Problems
Underbite
An underbite occurs when the bottom teeth protrude over the top teeth, giving a “bulldog” look. Underbites often require patients to wear braces longer and can require jaw surgery.
Open Bite
If the upper and lower front teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed—leaving a visible gap—it is called an open bite. This can be caused by:
Thumb-sucking
Genetics
Abnormal jaw growth
Open bites are among the most difficult to correct because they often involve both dental and skeletal components. They can also lead to speech difficulties and improper swallowing patterns.
Overbites
An overbite occurs when the top front teeth significantly overlap the bottom front teeth. This is a common bite problem, and severe overbites can cause:
Excessive wear on the front teeth
Gum irritation
Jaw pain
Overbites are usually easier to correct than underbites or open bites, especially when treated early.
Crossbites
A crossbite happens when the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth due to misalignment. It can affect one or both sides of the mouth and may involve front or back teeth. Crossbites can lead to:
Uneven tooth wear
Gum recession
Difficulty chewing
Though challenging, crossbites are typically manageable with braces or clear aligners.
Treatment
Fixing severe bite problems may require one or more of the following treatments:
Braces
Aligners
Surgery
Orthodontic headgear
Restorative dentistry
Tooth extractions
