What Should I Do If My Braces Hurt?

Braces have a reputation of being a painful experience, but once you get used to them, you will forget they are even there. It is common to experience some discomfort right after they are placed, and after they are tightened, but this is how you know the braces are doing their job!

Tips for Soothing Pain from Braces

Here are some tips to ease the pain for those times when your braces are uncomfortable:

  1. Eat Soft Foods. Your teeth may feel sore after your braces are placed or after they are tightened, especially when chewing. Choose soft foods to eat, like soup, smoothies, mashed potatoes, yogurt, or ice cream.

  2. Drink Cold Water. Staying hydrated will reduce pain from braces, especially drinking ice cold water, which will slightly numb your mouth and reduce inflammation.

  3. Use Orthodontic Wax. Your orthodontist has likely sent you home with some orthodontic wax. You can use it to protect your lips, inner cheeks, and tongue from the sharp parts of your braces by molding it to the bracket that is causing irritation.

  4. Rinse with Salt Water. Mix a glass of warm water with half a teaspoon of salt. Rinse this mixture in your mouth for about thirty seconds. This will help to heal any cuts or sores in your mouth from the braces.

  5. Massage Your Gums. Just like a back massage can relieve back pain, you can massage your gums when braces cause soreness. Simply rub your gums using a circular motion with your fingers. For more pain relief, first rub your gums with an ice cube and then massage them.
