How often will I need to see my orthodontist while wearing braces?

An estimated 4 million people in the United States are wearing braces today. Braces are a great investment of time and money that can ultimately lead to higher self-confidence in your teeth and better oral health. To reach these outcomes, patients should get regular check-ups on their braces to assess their progress and prevent teeth regression.

Appointments with braces on

After braces are applied, patients should see the orthodontist every four to eight weeks. During these appointments, your orthodontist might:

  • Adjust your braces

  • Tighten your wires

  • Replace your wires

  • Check your progress

  • Offer new rubber bands

These appointments may range from relatively quick check-ups to longer appointments where wires or bands are replaced.

Why these appointments matter

These appointments ensure that the orthodontist can accurately determine if your teeth are moving correctly and that the braces and wires are situated properly. These adjustments help to avoid problems and complications and provide a smoother treatment process.

Appointments after braces come off

After completing your orthodontic treatment, you will still need to return to the orthodontist to get retainers and participate in routine check-ups. After removing your braces, you should expect to attend a few appointments within the first year.

During these appointments, the orthodontist will check that your retainer is keeping your teeth in place, that your teeth have not shifted, and that proper healing is taking place. This is to prevent the need for braces again or other interventions later on.
