The Most Common Orthodontic Issues
Many people require braces because their teeth or bite are not properly aligned, known as malocclusion. There are many types of malocclusion, which can be fixed by braces or other orthodontia, or surgery.
1. Crowding
Crowding occurs when there is not enough space in the jaw for all teeth to align properly so they begin to overlap. Teeth that overlap can have uneven wear and tear and gum disease, as it is more difficult to keep them clean.
2. Spacing
Spacing is when there are large gaps between teeth, which can be the result of genetics, missing teeth, or teeth that are too small. Spacing can be fixed with braces and/or dental implants.
3. Open Bite
An open bite is when the top and bottom teeth do not meet at all when the mouth and jaw are closed. This can be due to genetics; prolonged pacifier use, thumb-sucking, or tongue-thrusting, or it can happen simply because the child has a mix of baby and permanent teeth and too much bone growth.
4. Underbite
When the lower teeth overlap and sit in front of the upper teeth, this is known as an underbite. An underbite is usually caused by a misalignment of the lower jaw, which is typically present at birth.
5. Overbite
Also known as a deep bite, this is when the upper teeth sit too far in front of the lower teeth and sometimes completely cover them. An overbite can happen because of a malformed jaw, genetics, or from prolonged bottle-feeding, thumb-sucking, or tongue-thrusting.
6. Crossbite
A crossbite occurs when just some of the upper teeth sit behind the lower teeth. This can be hereditary, or because of a delayed loss of baby teeth, or oversized adenoids or tonsils.
