How Do Clear Aligners Work?
Clear Aligners are a method for straightening teeth, an increasingly popular alternative to traditional metal braces because they are virtually invisible. While they are just as effective as braces, the way Clear Aligners work is slightly different from traditional braces.
Beginning Clear Aligner Treatment
You will first meet with a Clear Aligners-certified orthodontist, who will examine your teeth and determine if you are eligible for Clear Aligners. Then, if you are eligible, they will take digital scans, photographs, and x-rays of your mouth and teeth, which will be sent to the Clear Aligner laboratory where your custom aligner trays will be made. Clear Aligner trays are made of clear thermoplastic, so they are comfortable and inconspicuous.
When the aligners are ready, you will return to the orthodontist’s office to pick them up. Your orthodontist may attach small tooth-colored pieces to your teeth, known as SmartForce Technology attachments, that will help the aligning process. Your orthodontist will check to make sure the aligners fit correctly, and they will give you instructions on how to wear and care for the aligners.
How Clear Aligners Straighten Your Teeth
Clear Aligners straighten your teeth using 3D computer-imaging technology. This technology takes the current position of your teeth and their final straightened position to create a series of aligners that will gradually realign each of your teeth. Each pair of aligners move your teeth by applying a controlled force to specific teeth throughout treatment. If SmartForce Technology attachments are part of your treatment, these attachments act as a handle to give the aligners something to push against, so the force is applied in the correct direction.
You will switch to a new set of aligners every few weeks depending on your treatment plan, and you won’t need to visit your orthodontist every time you switch out aligners. You will just visit your orthodontist periodically so they can check the progress and make any adjustments if necessary.
