What Are the Different Types of Braces?
When you make the decision to get braces, the next thing to think about is what type of braces you want. There are five main types of braces, with each type best suited for different cases.
Traditional Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most common type of braces. They work by adhering metal brackets to the front surface of each tooth, then connecting all the brackets with a wire. The wire is fastened to the brackets using small elastic bands. Metal braces provide the quickest treatment times and are best suited for children and teens.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces work the same way as metal braces, but they are less noticeable because they are made of clear, tooth-colored material. They are popular among teens and adults who want a discreet way to straighten their teeth.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are fixed to the backside of a tooth, rather than the front, making lingual braces the most inconspicuous type of braces because nobody can see them at all. They are well-suited for teens or adults with complex orthodontic needs who don’t want their braces to be noticed.
Self-ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces use brackets and wire, like metal and ceramic braces, but self-ligating braces use doors or clips to keep the wire in place, instead of elastic bands. Self-ligating braces are quicker and easier to adjust than metal braces, resulting in shorter appointment times. This makes them a good option for:
Patients who are sensitive to pain or discomfort
Patients who cannot sit still for adjustments for very long
Patients with developmental delays
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are flexible plastic trays that fit over your teeth. You need to wear them for 20 to 22 hours each day and you will get a new tray every 1-2 weeks. Many people choose clear aligners because they are transparent and removable, making eating, brushing, and flossing easier.
