What is a crossbite?
A crossbite is a dental issue where teeth align improperly. With a crossbite, the upper teeth fall inside the bottom teeth when biting down. Crossbites may be caused by genetics, thumb sucking, pacifier use, mouth breathing, or tongue thrusting. They may affect a single tooth, multiple teeth, or groups of teeth.
There are a few different types of crossbites:
Anterior: Anterior crossbites, or underbites, are when the lower front teeth stick out past the top teeth. Anterior crossbites are the most common type of crossbites.
Posterior: Posterior crossbites affect the back teeth on one or both sides.
Symptoms
Physical symptoms of crossbites include:
Jaw pain
Headaches
Gum disease
Speech impediments
Trouble chewing and biting
Grinding or clenching teeth
It is crucial to treat a crossbite, as it can eventually lead to a lopsided jaw or excessive enamel wear. Crossbites can also cause crowded teeth and a smaller jaw. In severe cases, an untreated crossbite may require surgery.
